Litauen – das überraschend andere Baltikum
Litauen ist das Unerwartete, das andere Baltikum. Die grüne von der Eiszeit geprägte Landschaft ist von Weite, Wäldern und Mooren durchzogen. Natur wird in den dünn besiedelten Gegenden groß geschrieben. Die Kurische Nehrung, die als Landzunge im Norden das Kurische Haff von der Ostsee trennt, ist mit ihren weißen Sanddünen (UNESCO-Welterbe) ein großartiges Highlight. Auch Thomas Mann baute hier einst sein Ferienhaus. „Das Meer ist keine Landschaft, es ist das Erlebnis der Ewigkeit“.
Litauen ist der südlichste und größte der drei baltischen Staaten. Zwischen Weißrussland und der russischen Enklave Kaliningrad (Königsberg) gelegen, steht das Land aus den Erfahrungen der eigenen Geschichte entschlossen an der Seite der Ukraine. 1991 hat Litauen im sogenannten „Blutsonntag“ die Unabhängigkeit von Russland erlangt, die Erinnerungen an eine lange Geschichte der Revolten bleibt prägend. Das macht einen Besuch in Litauen auch aus gesellschaftspolitischer und historischer Sicht spannend.
Eine Besonderheit ist die litauische Sprache, die gemeinsam mit dem Lettischen die Gruppe der baltischen Sprachen bildet.
Vilnius, die Hauptstadt, liegt fast im Mittelpunkt von Europa. Die Altstadt gehört zum Welterbe der UNESCO. Malerische Gassen, bunte Innenhöfe und überraschend zahlreiche Barockkirchen verzaubern jeden Flaneur. Doch Vilnius und die ehemalige Hauptstadt Kaunas verblüffen auch mit moderner Kunst und spannendem Design, auf das wir unser Augenmerk richten.

Am Vormittag zeigt der ausführliche Stadtrundgang die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Altstadt. Die katholischen Barockkirchen prägen ebenso wie das Gediminas Denkmal, die Gedenksteine an den „Baltischen Weg“ der Unabhängigkeit von der Sowjetunion und das Denkmal des Dichters Adam Mickiewicz die Identität der Litauer. Die älteste Universität Osteuropas ist ein architektonisches Highlight und intellektuelles Zentrum. Mit der Shoa wurde das multireligiöse Litauen zerstört. Im ehemaligen jüdischen Viertel sprechen wir mit einem Vertreter eines Museums über die Erinnerungskultur.
Zur gemeinsamen Mittagspause probieren wir das litauische Nationalgericht Zeppelinas.
Nachmittags Besuch des Okkupationsmuseums mit Aufarbeitung der sowjetischen Besatzung. Anschließend bummeln wir von einer Insiderin begleitet durch das gentrifizierte Künstlerviertel Uzupis.

Besuch der Kirche St. Peter und Paul und des Friedhofs mit den Gräbern der Gefallenen der napoleonischen Kriege und der Toten des Aufstandes zur Unabhängigkeit von der Sowjetunion.
Weiterfahrt nach Trakai, dem nationalen Symbol der in einer Seenlandschaft gelegenen Burg. (Außenbesichtigung)
Gemeinsames Mittagessen in Trakai mit Vertretern der Minderheit der Karaer (Turkvolk), Besichtigung ihrer typischen Holzhäuser (Museum) und Gespräche über die Akzeptanz als Minderheit.
Am Nachmittag Weiterfahrt in die alte Hauptstadt Kaunas.

Am Vormittag ausführliche Stadtbesichtigung der alten Hauptstadt Litauens mit Vilniusstraße, Freiheitsallee, der Innenstadt mit den architektonisch interessanten Gebäuden der Post, des Theaters, der Kathedrale St. Peter und Paul, der mittelalterliche Burgruine, des Rathauses „Weißer Schwan“ und der Vytautas-Magnus-Kirche als ältester Kirche Kaunas. Schwerpunkt des Stadtrundgangs ist das Verständnis der Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, in der Kaunas bis zur Besetzung durch die Rote Armee und anschließend die Deutsche Wehrmacht ein boomendes, modernes Zentrum des Landes war.
Mittagessen zur freien Verfügung
Am Nachmittag Fahrt mit der Seilbahn zum Zaliakalnis Hügel und Spaziergang durch die Viertel oberhalb der Stadt mit Wohnhäusern und Villen aus den Zwanziger Jahren, der Epoche der Unabhängigkeit Litauens und den daraus resultierenden eigenständigen Entwicklungen auch in der Kunst. Ausblick vom Turm der Kirche „Christi Auferstehung“, jüdischer Friedhof, Museum der schönen Villen, M.K. Ciurlionis Gemäldegalerie.
